From 432lbs to 162lbs, meet our Guest Speaker Amy Murphy who has literally turned her life around through running and healthy eating.

If you ask runners why they first started running, the majority of us would say it was to lose weight or to get fit but for Amy Murphy it literally was a life-changing event.

In September 2016, after years of yo-yo dieting, hiding in her house in fear of the constant judgements and abuse she received from strangers, Amy weighed 432 lbs and was literally eating herself to death with a vicious cycle of emotional binge-eating, restrictive eating and then out-eating everything she exercised off.  So she made the huge decision to undertake Bariatric surgery and take back control of her life!

Amy re-discovered her love of playing Badminton, finally saw the work she put in at the gym after years was showing, and in 2018 she went to her first Parkrun with friends she found through Instagram and discovered running and giggles with friends go hand-in-hand. She then joined “North Bristol Running Group” and “Active Soul UK” to improve on her fitness by pushing running to the next level.

Over the last few years, Amy has lost an incredible 270lbs through a complete change of attitude to food, nutrition and exercise. Her honest account of her progress and further surgeries she has undertaken, to remove excess skin from the weightloss, has been a journey many people have followed her on and we are absolutely delighted to announce Amy will be at the RunFit Expo next May to talk to us about her story so far.

In the meantime, we’ve had a chat with Amy about all things running.

WHAT WERE YOUR FIRST EXPERIENCES OF RUNNING?

I felt free! It was something I could do by myself, just grab a pair of trainers and go. I started with the Couch to 5k plan and pretty quickly realised I had well and truly fell in love with running.

HOW HAS YOUR ATTITUDE TOWARDS RUNNING CHANGED?

I initially started running to help towards increasing my fitness and help with my weight loss but I soon discovered running gives me so much more than that.  I now use it for fun, for a change to meet up and run with friends and to help de-stress, there is nothing like running off a bad mood with a good run.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE KIND OF RUN?

I love running 10ks, they are fun but 10 miles is also great because you can slow down and really enjoy the moment.  I tend to stick to road running as I’m a bit clumsy so I don’t think me and trail running would get on very well.

My favourite race is the Bristol 10k, it was my very first race so it will always be special to me and the atmosphere is amazing.

HAVE YOU TKANE PART IN ROCK N ROLL RACES BEFORE?

No, Liverpool will be my first one.  I’ve seen so many of my friends taking part over the years and it looks like a great race so can’t wait to join in.

WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN FOR RUNNING?

Focus on pacing yourself before you work on speed.

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE RUNNING GOALS?

To run a half marathon, to keep up fitness and to enter more races.
